6 Frequently Ask Questions for Microsoft Windows use and lifecycle
In het kort
1. What is the Lifecycle Policy for Windows products?
Windows products are governed by either a Modern Lifecycle Policy or a Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft Lifecycle offers clear and reliable guidelines for product support, assisting customers in managing their IT investments and environments while strategically planning for the future.
The Modern Lifecycle Policy applies to products and services that receive continuous servicing and support. To maintain support under this policy, the following conditions must be fulfilled:
a. Customers need to remain up-to-date with the servicing and system requirements provided for the product or service.
b. Customers must hold a valid license for the product or service.
c. Microsoft must currently provide support for the product or service.
2. What are the prerequisites for servicing and updating Windows?
Customers must have a supported version of Windows to receive monthly quality updates. Windows quality updates are cumulative, with each new update building upon the ones before it.
3. What happens anytime there is a new Windows release?
With each release, Windows introduces new features and functionality. At times, Microsoft may cease development or remove certain features and functions.
4. If I obtained Windows when I purchased a new device, who provides support?
With a valid Windows license, you are entitled to Microsoft support, in line with the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy and the terms and conditions active at your time of purchase. If you obtained your Windows operating system license through a new device from an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), Microsoft provides extensive online self-help resources, along with paid technical support options. Additionally, you can reach out to your OEM for details on their specific support offerings for Windows operating systems.
5. Can I use prior versions of Windows on a device running a newer version?
Customers wishing to use earlier versions of Windows on devices currently running a newer version can obtain a license for downgrade rights. These rights differ based on how the software was purchased, whether through Volume Licensing, an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), or as a Full Packaged Product (FPP).
NOTE:
A device may be unable to run previous versions of Windows if it’s hardware is incompatible, lacks updated drivers, or falls outside the support period provided by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
6. When a Windows operating system (OS) reaches the end of its lifecycle or is no longer supported, does that mean new programs will not run on that OS?
When a Microsoft operating system (OS) reaches the end of its support period, customers will no longer receive technical assistance, software updates, or security patches. Although the OS may still function with existing programs and hardware after support ends, there is an increased likelihood that new programs and hardware will perform poorly on the outdated Operating System. This often happens because manufacturers and software developers design their products to leverage the enhanced features and capabilities of newer operating systems. Consequently, they might opt to discontinue support for their products on older systems as deemed necessary.
