Access to the new Microsoft Entra ID Governance Frontline worker licenses now available

What does Microsoft ENTRA ID Governance stand for?  

Microsoft Entra ID Governance is a comprehensive identity governance solution designed to help organizations effectively manage and secure access to their resources. By automating the identity and access lifecycle, it ensures that the right individuals have appropriate access to the right resources when needed.  

Starting May 1, 2024, Microsoft introduced two new products for Frontline workers which are all User Subscription licenses. These are;

1. Microsoft Entra ID Governance Frontline Worker: This license grants frontline workers access to Entra ID governance capabilities specifically designed to meet their unique needs.   
2. Microsoft Entra ID Governance Step-Up for Microsoft Entra ID F2 for Frontline Worker:   This license serves as an add-on to the Microsoft Entra ID F2 license, enhancing identity and access management capabilities for users who already possess the Entra ID F2 license. It upgrades their experience by integrating Entra ID Governance Frontline Worker features.  

The 4 major features of Microsoft Entra ID Governance includes; 

1. Identity Lifecycle Management  

It streamlines the creation and management of user identities by exploring signals from HR systems. This approach enables new employees to be productive from day one and ensures that access is promptly revoked when they leave the organization.  

2. Access Lifecycle Management  

It efficiently manages access to services and applications, whether on-premises or in the cloud, by automating the processes of access assignment, review, and removal.  

3. Compliance and Regulation  

It assists organizations in meeting compliance requirements by effectively managing and verifying controls related to access management.  

4. Privileged Access Management    

It ensures privileged access for administration while safeguarding, monitoring, and auditing access to critical assets.  

What licensing programs offer Entra ID Governance Frontline Worker licenses  

Entra ID Governance Frontline Worker licenses are offered on a per-user basis and can be obtained through the following licensing programs.  

• Enterprise Agreement (EA)  

• Enterprise Subscription Agreement (EAS)  

• Microsoft Customer Agreement (MCA)  

Licensing prerequisites for using Microsoft Entra ID Governance Frontline Worker licenses    

Microsoft Entra ID Governance Frontline Worker licenses can only be assigned to users who meet one or more of the following criteria. These are…  

1. Workers who utilize a primary work device equipped with a single screen smaller than 10.9 inches.   
2. Users who share their main work device with other eligible users who hold Microsoft 365, Office 365, or Entra ID Governance Frontline Worker licenses, either during shifts or across different shifts.  

• Other licensed Microsoft Frontline Worker users must use this device as their primary work device. 

• Any software or services utilized on the shared device must have a corresponding license assigned to either the device or its users, which covers the use of those particular software or services.  

Any qualifying Entra ID Governance Frontline licenses?  

Yes, there are. This includes Microsoft 365 F1/F3, and the Microsoft Entra ID Governance Step-Up specifically designed for Microsoft Entra ID F2, tailored for Frontline Workers.  

To effectively use the Microsoft Entra ID Governance Step-Up for Microsoft Entra ID F2, each Frontline Worker (User SL) must hold a valid Microsoft Entra ID F2 license.
